I am currently appointed as the President and Chief Executive Officer of the South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC) – the largest funder of biomedical, health and behavioural sciences funder from Africa. I am also appointed as Professor of Medicine at the University of Cape Town, where I previously served as the Chair and Head of the Department of Medicine for nearly a decade.
My lifelong passion for evidence-based healthcare, equitable health access, noncommunicable disease multimorbidity, and universal health coverage has positioned me as a leader in medical research and a key opinion leader in global health. I am motivated to contribute to strengthening the global science/policy interface in health – with a particular focus on equity, relevance, My career has been dedicated to building and leading health research systems in low- and middle-income settings, translating scientific evidence into policy, and advancing locally led research that addresses the highest public health priorities. I bring experience at the intersection of research, funding, governance, and implementation, and I am committed to ensuring that global scientific advice reflects diverse contexts, strengthens national decision-making, and accelerates progress toward universal health coverage and the Sustainable Development Goals. I strongly believe that robust, inclusive, and policy-relevant science is foundational to improving global health outcomes.
I am a qualified physician and cardiologist, and hold several additional qualifications, including two doctorates: a DPhil in Cardiovascular Medicine from the University of Oxford, St. Cross College, and an MD in Cardiology from the University of Cape Town. I am a member of the Academy of Science of South Africa, and have fellowships from The World Academy of Science, the Royal Society of South Africa, the Royal College of Physicians, and the University of Cape Town College of Fellows.
My global health leadership spans various national, regional, and international platforms, where I have played pivotal roles in shaping academic agendas, postgraduate medical education standards, and advancing key national strategic priorities. My commitment to mentoring young professionals and supervising postgraduate students underscores my passion for nurturing the next generation of scientific and clinical leaders.
